Navigating The Route

This is a circular Spy Mission around Newport Harbour, town and estuary, with Agents helping Agent Cam O'Flage after enemy spy organisation SEA have set up a coffee shack in Newport as a front for their underground lair - he has infiltrated their base and is feeding back clues so you can disable their drone scheme.

The mission covers approximately 2 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You'll begin at Harbour (Parrog) car park, gather your first intel in the start area, investigate Newport's harbour, town streets and estuary-side clues, then loop back towards the car park where you began.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, as there are unavoidable steps. Expect paths and pavements, gravel path sections, uphill stretches, a narrow lane, a private road that is OK for walkers, and some places with narrow pavements or no pavement.

Take extra care around traffic. A main road gets very busy, especially in summer, and there is no pavement on one uphill section, so use the pedestrian crossings and stay alert on the narrow pavements.

Getting There

By car: Start your operation at Harbour (Parrog) car park (SA42 0RP), using ///dribble.tarred.superhero. Park here to begin; your first two clues are in the car park.

By public transport: Make your way to Harbour (Parrog) car park to begin the mission. The circular route loops back to the start area and passes the car park where you began.

Need the Loo?

There are toilets at the start and towards the end of the route, giving Agents a tactical comfort-stop option before the operation begins and again later in the mission.

Four-legged Agents can join this outdoor operation. 🐾

The route includes pavements, gravel path sections, uphill stretches, a narrow lane, unavoidable steps, narrow pavements and places with no pavement, so keep canine recruits close around traffic - especially on the busy main road and the uphill section without a pavement.

Food & Drink Stops

Drone-disabling is hungry work, so plan a refuelling strategy before you set off.

Refreshments and snacks are available at the start and after Clue 08. The Castle Inn is a good place for a quick break, and a cafe and take-away is mentioned near the end of Parrog Road. If you are bringing your own supplies, the small gardens at Clues 14-15 make a handy picnic spot.

Carreg Coetan Arthur

This Neolithic burial chamber dates from around 3,500 - 3,000 BC and was excavated in 1979-1980. Its name suggests it could have been used as the chamber of King Arthur, who fought against the Saxons - ideal for Agents who like their spy work with a very ancient mystery attached.

Newport Castle

The castle site on Penffald was built by Lord Marcher of Kemes in 1191, although none of the original castle survives. The oldest remaining parts are thought to date to the late-13th century, and the site was Grade I listed in 1952. It is privately owned and not open to the public, so enjoy this one respectfully from outside while keeping the mission moving.

Optional by car: Newport Beach

Before leaving the area, you can visit Newport Beach, a beautiful sandy beach that won a Rural Seaside Award in 2015. It is a three-mile drive over the bridge across the River Nevern; follow the brown signs from the town.
