Scorpions, Secret Signals and Sparkling Smugglers in Chipping Ongar!
Attention, agents! Suspicious whispers are swirling around Chipping Ongar Station about scorpions lurking near the railway. But Spy HQ has uncovered the truth... "Scorpion" is actually a coded warning used by a gang of jewel thieves. When their lookout mutters the word, it clears the area so parcels can be quietly moved along the Epping Ongar Railway.
The mastermind behind the scheme is slippery crook Don Scorpione, and his latest shipment contains glittering gemstones known as "Twinkles". His gang even has a second signal - a soft whistle of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star means the gems are on the move and the handoff is happening.
Your mission is to intercept the stolen packages before they disappear down the line. But beware - each bundle is fitted with a tracker. Grab one without disabling it first and Don Scorpione will know exactly where you are!
Spy Mission Through Chipping Ongar's Historic Streets, Station and Castle
Your self-guided spy mission will take you sneaking through the charming streets and secret corners of Chipping Ongar. You'll gather intel along the High Street, slip past historic cottages and the town church, and track suspicious activity around the Epping Ongar Railway station before heading towards the remains of Ongar Castle itself.
Along the way you'll uncover hidden signals, crack clever spy codes and collect the vital intel needed to stop Don Scorpione's sparkling smuggling operation. But stay sharp - his gang could be watching, and one wrong move might trigger their alarms.
The Twinkle gem shipment is already in motion. Only by cracking the clues, disabling the trackers and outsmarting Don Scorpione can you stop the smugglers and save the day.
Agents… your mission begins now.
Will YOU crack the code and stop Don Scorpione before the jewels vanish for good?

Navigational Advice
This Spy Mission Trail takes agents around the historic streets, footpaths and green corners of Chipping Ongar. You’ll follow pavements through the town centre before slipping onto quieter paths near the station and castle grounds.
Some of the paths can become muddy after wet weather, and a few sections are uneven, so sensible footwear is recommended. Because of these rougher paths, the route isn’t suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged field agents are welcome on this mission! Dogs can join you along most of the route and will enjoy sniffing around the quieter lanes and paths near the town’s historic edges.
Just keep leads handy near roads and around the busier sections of the High Street.
Parking Sorted!
Parking is nice and simple before your mission begins:
Chipping Ongar Library (CM5 9AB) – Convenient parking right by the Trail start point on High Street.
Bansons Lane – Additional nearby parking opposite the library if the main spaces are full.
Perfect whether you're arriving in your undercover vehicle or blending in with the locals.
Need the Loo?
Public toilets can be found across the road from the library near the start and end of the Trail.
You’ll also pass cafés, pubs, shops and supermarkets along the route where agents can refuel and regroup.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Epping Ongar Railway - The heritage Epping Ongar Railway runs vintage trains through the Essex countryside and plays a starring role in this mission. It’s a great place to explore after your spy work is complete – and you might even spot a steam train!
Ongar Castle - Admittedly, there's not much left to see of Ongar Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress dating back to around 1086. However, hidden among the trees, the steep mound (motte) still survives and gives a glimpse of the town’s medieval past.
Greensted Church Detour - If you fancy an extra adventure, there’s an optional detour to nearby Greensted. Here you’ll find St Andrew’s Church, believed to be the oldest wooden church in the world, built from huge upright oak logs in the 11th century. It’s a fascinating historical bonus stop for curious explorers.
