The Legacy of Walt Malt, the Old Salt

A long-lost whisky stash is hidden somewhere on Arran! Walt Malt, an old sailor involved in 19th-century malt whisky smuggling, is said to have buried gallons of home-distilled 'water of life' before sailing off and vanishing for good. Now, Exploration Society HQ has uncovered old papers and a curious map that could finally reveal the hiding place. Are you ready to beat the rival Adventurers' Agency to the prize?

Adventure Through Blackwaterfoot

Join the quest on a short, self-guided walking Trail around the beautiful village of Blackwaterfoot. Starting near the harbour, you'll follow a circular route through this scenic coastal spot, solving clues as you explore the village, bridge, shoreline and golf course area.

With around one mile of good terrain, this gentle adventure is ideal for young Explorers, families, and treasure seekers using wheelchairs or pushchairs. Along the way, you'll uncover hidden details, crack clues, and cross off wrong locations on your treasure map until only Walt Malt's secret stash remains.

Keep your eyes peeled for yellow-clad rivals from the Adventurers' Agency... they may be after the whisky too! Can you solve the clues, find the stash, and help HQ recover Arran's legendary lost treasure?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt around the village of Blackwaterfoot on the Isle of Arran, with explorers following pavements, roads and coastal paths as they track down Walt Malt’s hidden stash.

With around one mile of good terrain, this is a gentle and accessible route suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Do note that there are a few sections without pavements, so take care near roads, walk in single file where needed and keep a close eye on younger explorers.

Getting There

Time to gather your explorers and begin the quest:

Best Western Kinloch Hotel Car Park (KA27 8ET) - Your expedition base and official starting point.

You’ll begin solving your first clues right here before heading out into the village.

Need the Loo?

Even the boldest adventurers need a quick pit stop!

Public toilets can be found:

Next to the main car park at the start of your adventure

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged explorers are welcome on this coastal quest.

With open village routes and shoreline stretches, it’s a lovely outing for dogs - just keep leads handy near roads and when sharing space with other adventurers.

Food & Drink Stops

Plan ahead, explorers!

Refreshment options are limited along the route, but you can stock up at the Post Office just uphill from the hotel before setting off.

Better yet, bring a picnic to enjoy along the coast, where you’ll find some brilliant spots to pause, refuel and take in those sea views.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Coastal Views & Cliffside Wandering

Blackwaterfoot offers stunning views out to sea, and a wander along the shoreline leads towards the dramatic Drumadoon cliffs - formed from ancient lava flows and perfect for a mini expedition.

Wildlife Watching & Big Skies

Keep your eyes peeled for seabirds like fulmars and gannets. A pair of binoculars turns this gentle treasure hunt into a full-on explorer’s mission.

History, Legends & Hidden Caves

Not far from here lies the King’s Cave, linked to Robert the Bruce and his famous spider moment. Add in Iron Age hillforts and ancient landscapes, and you’ve got plenty more to explore once the treasure is found.
