Top secret!

We've got a mission for you in

Tintern

This Trail can’t be completed on Mondays or Tuesdays due to the Abbey Mill area being closed. Please attempt this mission on another day.

Birds Driven Batty by Bleeping!

The peaceful ecosystem around Tintern Abbey is in grave danger! Rumour has it that the eccentric professor, Dr. Madden Badd, has grown tired of the birdsong and birdwatchers in the area, and has devised a devious plan to get rid of them. Our intelligence suggests that he has hidden high-frequency sound wave devices throughout the village, causing the birds to flee in a panic. This will not only disrupt the tranquillity of the area but also give the mad professor more time to scheme up sinister plots. We can't let that happen!

But, fear not, dear agents - we have a plan. It's up to you, our top secret agents, to discreetly navigate the town, gather intel, and deactivate the devices, bringing back the birds and restoring peace to Tintern. Are you up for the challenge?

Spy Mission Through Tintern Village, River, and Abbey

Attention agents - your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to embark on an exciting self-guided Spy Mission Trail through the charming village of Tintern. As you tiptoe through the town, keep your eyes peeled for sneaky clues hidden throughout the village, around the abbey, and beside the River Wye. But beware, not all birds may be what they seem - some could be enemy drones in disguise!

The stakes are high, and only the most daring and cunning agents will be able to crack the code and save the day. Good luck!

Essential Intel

🚨 Do not attempt this mission on a Monday or Tuesday. The Abbey Mill area used by the Trail is closed on those days, which will prevent completion of several clues. The current published opening hours for Abbey Mill are Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30am to 5:00pm.

Navigating The Route

This is a circular spy mission through Tintern village, the riverside, Abbey Mill and the area surrounding the world-famous abbey ruins, with agents following pavements, footpaths, riverside walkways and village streets as they gather the intel needed to stop Dr Madden Badd's bird-bothering device.

The route is approximately one mile long and follows a mixture of pavements, riverside paths and village walkways. Most of the mission is fairly straightforward, but there are some steep steps at Abbey Mill and a few slopes to negotiate along the way. As a result, the Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

⚠️ Important: Agents will encounter busy roads, riverside areas and several road crossings during the operation. Take particular care along the main road through the village, where traffic can be busy, and supervise Mini Agents closely throughout the mission.

⚠️ Parts of the route run beside the River Wye, so operatives should stay alert near the water's edge and take extra care on paths, steps and bridges, especially after wet weather.

Getting There

Time to deploy your agents and begin the mission:

By car: HQ recommends using the pay and display car park nearest the river in Tintern (NP16 6TE), which is also where the mission begins. Be aware that parking can become very busy, particularly during weekends and summer holidays.

By public transport: Tintern is served by local bus services connecting with Chepstow and surrounding areas, making it possible to reach the mission zone without a car.

Your first clue awaits at the mini-roundabout by the river, beside the information boards overlooking the water, so switch to stealth mode immediately and begin gathering intel.

Need the Loo?

Even elite agents need a comfort break during a lengthy operation!

Public toilets can be found close to the start point beside the car park near the White Monk Tea Rooms, making this a handy opportunity to visit HQ facilities before setting off to save Tintern's feathered residents.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged agents are welcome on this mission 🐾

The route follows public footpaths, village streets and riverside walkways that make for an enjoyable outing with canine operatives. Just keep leads handy near roads, the river and around busy visitor areas.

Food & Drink Stops

Agents, keep your energy levels topped up!

HQ's briefing notes mention plenty of opportunities to stop for refreshments and stock up on supplies throughout the village, with several cafés, pubs and picnic spots available along the route.

If you've packed your own field rations, the riverside areas provide excellent locations to pause, compare intelligence reports and enjoy the scenery while remaining alert for suspicious henchman activity.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Tintern Abbey

One of Wales' most spectacular historic landmarks sits at the heart of the mission. Founded in 1131, Tintern Abbey is considered one of the finest monastic ruins in Britain and has inspired visitors, artists and poets for centuries.

Abbey Mill and the Wye Valley Centre

The mission passes through the historic Abbey Mill area, home to independent shops, crafts and cafés. If you're visiting on a Wednesday to Sunday, it's worth allowing extra time to browse the site and its riverside setting.

The River Wye

Much of the operation takes place beside one of Britain's most scenic rivers. The Wye is famous for its wildlife, dramatic valley scenery and rich industrial and maritime history.

Optional Detour - Explore Tintern Abbey

The Trail does not require entry to the abbey grounds, but the booklet specifically highlights this as an optional detour. If time allows, it's well worth exploring the abbey after completing your mission. Please note that there is an admission charge.
