Staithes

Many years ago, the small seaside village of Staithes was plagued by a curse from the miserable mermaid, Molly Minnow. Legend has it that after getting stuck between a rock and a hard plaice, she was left floundering and in a fit of anger, cursed the village. Local fishermen watched as she struggled to free herself and witnessed her proclamation that the village would be doomed unless a valuable sacrifice was made to the sea. For ages, the villagers mulled over what it could all mean. But one brave local lad, John Dory, tired of hearing people carp on about the curse, vowed to discover what Molly wanted.

Treasure Hunt Through Cook's Seaside Village

Join the adventure and explore the charming village of Staithes on this self-guided Treasure Trail. As you follow the route, you'll uncover sneaky clues set on existing buildings, permanent features, and monuments. The Trail begins and ends in the main car park at the top of the hill and takes you through the narrow lanes and alleyways of this delightful seaside village.

Discover where Captain James Cook first discovered his passion for the sea and learn the secret behind the mermaid's curse. Legend has it that Molly was after the mythical Golden Goldfish, thought to only exist in legend. But could it really be true?

Don't miss your chance to solve the mystery and uncover the treasure in Staithes!
