Navigating The Route
This is a circular Detective Mystery around Sheringham Seafront & Promenade, with Detectives helping investigate what happened after Jenna-Rae Tor, owner of Sheringham's wind farm and self-declared 'Queen of Kites', was found unconscious in a wind tunnel - question the suspects and work out who snuffed the wind queen's sparkle.
The investigation covers approximately 1.7 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You'll begin around Station Approach, cross the tracks, head towards the church and war memorial, investigate The Boulevard, drop down to the seafront and promenade, then work through the town centre and High Street before finishing back at the start area.
This Trail is wheelchair accessible and pushchair accessible. The ground underfoot is good throughout, but there is a slope down to the seafront that is a bit steep, plus a later section with no pavement for a while where you need to walk single file and keep well clear of traffic.
Mind traffic when crossing roads and the roundabout, and stay well clear of vehicles on the no-pavement section. There is also a bridge over a slipway marked 'No Entry to Unauthorised Vehicles'.
Getting There
By car: The investigation starts at Station Approach Sheringham Car Park (NR26 8RA), using ///upon.giants.vitals. The Chief recommends parking at Station Approach Sheringham Car Park (NR26 8RG), using ///upon.giants.vitals. Once parked, exit the car park the way you drove in and turn left, cross the tracks, then turn left again onto Station Approach.
By public transport: Make your way to Station Approach Sheringham Car Park to begin the case. The North Norfolk Railway, also nicknamed the Poppy Line, runs between Sheringham and Holt via Weybourne - check timetables if you want to ride the rail line.
Need the Loo?
Public toilets are available at the start / finish point and after Clue 05, giving Detectives a handy early comfort stop before the case gathers pace.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged Detectives can join the investigation, with a few route-wise cautions 🐾
The route includes road crossings, a roundabout, seafront sections, the beach area, a slope down to the seafront and a section with no pavement for a while. Keep canine colleagues close around traffic, walk single file where needed, and take care near the slipway bridge and promenade.
Food & Drink Stops
Wind-powered mystery work needs decent supplies. Stock up on snacks before you start, or grab them along the route.
There are plenty of refreshments in the High Street after Clue 12 and again after Clue 19. If you have brought your own provisions, the park area by the seafront and the beach offer places to pause while you let the sea air clear your detective instincts.
Want to Make a Day of It?
North Norfolk Railway
The North Norfolk Railway, also nicknamed the Poppy Line, is a cracking extra if your squad fancies extending the day. It runs a 10.5-mile round trip between Sheringham and Holt via Weybourne, with steam and diesel trains puffing through lovely coastal countryside. Check timetables if you want to travel on it.
Sheringham Seafront and Promenade
The investigation spends time on Sheringham's seafront and promenade, including a park area near the sea and a scenic stretch where Detectives can feel the breeze and scan for clues. Once the culprit is cornered, slow things down here and enjoy the beach area without interrogating every gust of wind.
Sheringham Town Centre and High Street
The route goes through the town centre and along the High Street, where there are refreshments after Clue 12 and again after Clue 19. Keep your ears open for local character too - Sheringham locals are known as Shannocks, a nickname said to mean wild, reckless folk.
The Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm
Jenna-Rae Tor's windy world has a real local echo in the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm. Covering about 35 km2, it has 88 turbines and generates around 1.1TWh of electricity a year - enough to power almost 280,000 homes - while cutting emissions by around 500,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.
