More Information:
Essential Intel
Borough Market, which you'll encounter on the early part of the route between Clues 03 and 04, is closed on Mondays. There are works going on at Southwark Cathedral.
Navigating The Route
This is a linear Detective Mystery around Bankside The Globe & Riverside, with Detectives helping DCI Curt Tincall identify who was behind the disappearance of actor Ivan Egoe after the opening night of the Wobbleshaft Theatre Company's mystery play.
The investigation covers approximately 2 miles and should take around 1.5 hours to complete. You'll follow historic back streets, pass through Borough Market early in the route, investigate Southwark Cathedral and the Winchester Palace ruins, continue towards the Tate Modern around Sumner Street, then head onto the Thames Path and riverfront sections.
This Trail is wheelchair accessible and pushchair accessible. The route includes a hill at the start and pedestrian crossings along the way, so keep your squad together around traffic lights and busier crossing points.
Take care near the river and quay. Stay away from the Thames beaches at low tide, be careful near the railings and walls next to the river and quay, and note the position of lifebuoys as you go.
Getting There
By car: Begin the case at the Tooley Street entrance from London Bridge Underground Station (SE1 2SW). After the final clues, return to London Bridge Station by going between Minerva House and the Cathedral into Montague Close, then through the tunnel under the bridge and along Tooley Street to the end.
By public transport: Make your way to London Bridge Underground Station, then head for the Tooley Street entrance (SE1 2SW) to begin the investigation.
Need the Loo?
Public loos are available in London Bridge station, Southwark Cathedral Cafe, the Tate Modern and Borough Market, giving Detectives several chances to make a tactical comfort stop along the route.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
If four-legged Detectives are joining your riverside investigation, keep them close throughout. 🐾
The route includes historic back streets, pedestrian crossings, a hill at the start and busy riverfront sections. Take particular care near traffic lights and crossings, and keep dogs safely away from the Thames beaches at low tide, the quay edges, railings and walls beside the river.
Food & Drink Stops
There are plenty of refreshment stops along the route for hungry case-crackers. On Stoney Street, The Market Porter public house is open for breakfast beer from 6 to 8.30am to service the market porters coming off duty, and the route also passes the Founder's Arms public house.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Borough Market
The early part of the investigation leads you through Borough Market between Clues 03 and 04. It's a lively place to linger when it is open, but remember that it is closed on Mondays before planning your extra sleuthing time around it.
Southwark Cathedral
Southwark Cathedral stands at what was the only entrance to the City of London across the river for many centuries. It has long been a place of worship and hospitality, where princes and paupers, poets and prisoners have all found refuge. There are works going on at Southwark Cathedral, so allow for that if you are hoping to pause here.
Winchester Palace ruins
The case passes the visible remains of Winchester Palace, where an information board helps bring the ruins into focus. This area was once the 'Liberty of The Clink', outside the Sheriff of London's jurisdiction, and was granted a licence by the Bishops of Winchester for theatres, brothels and bear-baiting until Cromwell intervened.
The Tate Modern
The route passes the Tate Modern on the way along Sumner Street, then later heads to the riverside path beside it. It's a natural riverside add-on for Detectives who want to extend the day once Ivan Egoe's theatrical disappearance has been properly investigated.
