The Watercress Caper - Can YOU Save the Day?

Berkhamsted locals are in a pickle as their constant supply of watercress has all dried up. Rumour has it that the Grand Union Salad Smugglers (GUSS) have been secretly working the waterways, sneaking this leafy member of the cabbage family out of town to sell at a premium price. But their antics have hit a snag as a member has 'leek'ed details to the local police. Chief Inspector Vinnie Grett has called upon the help of top detectives to crack the case and put watercress back on the menu. Can YOU help save the day?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

The route isn’t friendly for wheelchair users and pushchairs. This is due to some steps along the way.

Bring your four-legged friends along! Dogs are welcome to run off steam in the Canal Fields park along the way.

The closest long stay pay and display car park to the Trail start point is at the Berkhamsted Station car park (HP4 2AR), just a minute walk away.

There are some fantastic events in Berkhamsted’s calendar, all of which are great times to visit this beautiful town. However, you may find that some of the clues on this Trail may become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact Berkhamsted Tourist Information.

There are public toilets available towards the beginning and middle of the Trail, and the route passes several pubs and a few cafes along the way.

Why not make a day of it and expand your exploration of Berkhamsted Castle, or see if the Dacorum Heritage Trust is holding an exhibition, to learn more twisting tales about the area? You could even head out of town and visit the National Trust-owned Ashridge Estate, just a 15-minute drive away.
