Navigating The Route
This is a circular Detective Mystery around Dumfries town centre, the Whitesands and the River Nith, with Detectives helping Chief Inspector Jason De Villan solve the toothy cold case of dentist Phil Macavity.
The investigation covers approximately 1.7 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You’ll patrol through the town centre, High Street, Queensberry Square, Burns Street, the riverside, suspension bridge, Dumfries Museum area, Robert Burns Centre and Old Bridge surroundings.
This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, as the route includes steps, steep slopes and stretches without pavements. You’ll also be crossing busy roads and walking near the river, so keep younger Detectives close and take extra care underfoot.
Getting There
Time to gather your squad and begin drilling into the evidence:
By car - Park in Whitesands car park (DG1 2RS), beside the river.
Start your inquiries along the river’s-edge side of the car park. The first clue is roughly central, just to the left of the lower benched area with wavy fencing. Look out for bikes while you solve the opening clue.
By public transport - Make your way into Dumfries town centre, then head for Whitesands car park beside the River Nith to begin the investigation.
Need the Loo?
Even the finest investigators need a comfort break mid-case. Toilets can be found on Munches Street between Clues 11 and 12, and near the Old Bridge after Clue 21, so plan your pit stops while the case is still biting.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged Detectives can join the investigation 🐾
This route includes town pavements, busy roads, riverside paths, steps, slopes and stretches without pavements. Keep canine colleagues close throughout, especially near traffic, the river, the suspension bridge and any narrower sections where the squad needs to stay tucked in.
Food & Drink Stops
Solving a dental disaster can leave the whole squad feeling peckish.
The first stretch of the case keeps you around Dumfries town centre, so there are plenty of places to grab provisions, drinks or a tactical snack before the route heads down towards the River Nith. It’s worth stocking up before Clue 14 if your Detectives are prone to emergency biscuit demands.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Robert Burns Statue, Burns House and St Michael’s Church
The route gives Detectives a strong dose of Burns history, passing the statue, Burns House, Jean Armour’s statue and St Michael’s Church. If the gates are open, the churchyard is well worth a respectful wander, with Robert Burns and several friends and associates buried there.
The Globe Inn Close
The investigation heads into the close beside The Globe Inn, one of the route’s characterful tucked-away stops. It’s a good place to pause, soak up a little Burns-linked atmosphere and keep one suspicious eyebrow raised for Phil’s next clue.
Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura
The case climbs towards Dumfries Museum, where the town’s Camera Obscura adds a brilliant extra reason to linger. It’s a standout stop for curious Detectives who want more local history after following Phil’s increasingly achey trail.
River Nith, Suspension Bridge and Old Bridge
The riverside section brings fresh air, bridge views and a scenic change of pace after the town clues. You’ll cross the suspension bridge, follow the waterside and reach the Old Bridge area, with the Robert Burns Centre nearby for anyone wanting to add more local flavour to the day.
