Can YOU help her find her father's fortune?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Please Note:

Troutbeck is a charming example of a long-established Lakeland village on the hills above Windermere, and below the summit of the Kirkstone Pass. There are whitewashed cottages and farms developed along the narrow and hilly old coach road that runs along the contours of the valley's west -side. From the historic 17th century Townend House in the south to the Mortal Man pub in the north. This was the Windermere - Penrith coach route, Troutbeck was the start of a long climb for the horses as they began to tackle Kirkstone Pass.

These days the main road runs along the valley floor, making the village ideal for a stroll. The Trail visits most of the village, as well as the historical Queens Head and the Jesus Church. There are no shops or cafes on the route other than the small Post Office where you can get ice creams, drinks and post cards. There are also a couple of excellent pubs along the route (Mortal Man Hotel and Queens Head).

The route is circular starting in the valley close to the church, at some points it is uneven as some footpaths are used so sturdy footwear is recommended. There are also long sections along country lanes with no pavements, so due care and attention is needed.

There is no car park and parking is limited in the village. The Trail starts by Jesus Church (LA23 1PB) on the A592 and there is parking along the road turning off just south of the church, next to the river, or on the main road outside the church.

The village can be reached using the 508 Penrith-Bowness bus route.
