The Case of the Missing Masterpieces - Help Solve the Mystery!

Attention all detectives! An urgent case has been assigned to YOU. An international gang of art thieves has set their sights on a collection of priceless Impressionist paintings at Penlee House, and it's up to YOU to stop them.

But this isn't your average case-this time, the stakes are even higher. The paintings were secured for a one-off charity event, but someone on the inside has tipped off the thieves. With the National Crime Agency (NCA) on the case, South West Regional Police Chief Superintendent Ivanta Crackadiscase has called on YOU, our top detectives, to assist in the investigation.

A Detective Mystery Through Penzance

Are you ready for a thrilling adventure through Penzance? This self-guided Detective Mystery Trail will take you on a journey through the town, starting at the railway station near the Tourist Information Centre.

As you follow the Trail route, keep your eyes peeled for sneaky clues hidden on existing buildings, permanent features, and monuments. Eliminate suspects and solve the mystery of whodunit as you explore the beautiful Cenotaph & Gardens, historic buildings, and the cobbled streets of Market Jew Street, with a stunning view of St Michael's Mount as your reward.

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you begin...

Before you embark on your gang-busting case around Penzance, here are a few things worth knowing:

DIVERSION!
Harbour works are taking place in the first part of 2026 while Ross Bridge is renovated. The Chief has set a diversion route around the worksite to keep disruption to your investigation to a minimum.

Navigation and terrain
The Trail uses mostly even pavements, with some uneven brick paving too. Expect steep hills and steps, plus granite underfoot that can get slippery after rain, so check the forecast and come prepared. This mix of terrain means the Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or heavy pushchairs. Light pushchairs may be manageable if you're happy lifting them over steps.

Bring your sniffer dogs along
This is a mainly urban beat but you will pass a couple of green spaces. Both welcome four-legged assistants (bins provided), but dogs should stay on leads.

Getting There - The Trail starts and ends at the entrance to Penzance Railway Station, (TR18 2LQ - W3W:///evening.bandstand.rarely) making it a great way to arrive! You've also got Penzance bus station right next door for extra convenience.
If driving, you can park up at the Harbour Long Stay pay and display car park (TR18 2GA - W3W:///vines.household.metro) is right by the start point, so you can park up and focus on the case straight away.

Need the loo?
Toilets can be found at:

  • West Cornwall Centre (near the start)

  • St John's Hall (later in the Trail, around Clues 18/19)

  • Penlee House Gallery & Museum cafe (customer facilities, around Clues 15/16)

Want to make a day of it?

Once you've cracked the case and sent the gang packing, Penzance has plenty to keep curious Detectives busy:
