Can YOU Uncover the Legendary Golden Gondolier?

The city of Birmingham is known as the 'Venice of the North' for its extensive canal system. But local archaeologists, Ian and Diana Jones, have uncovered a mysterious manuscript while moving documents to the new library building. After decoding it, they discovered that it is a map leading to a legendary treasure-the long-lost statue of the Golden Gondolier! Now, it's up to the bravest treasure hunters (YOU!) to venture beside the canal, crack the clues, and track down this elusive prize.

Treasure Hunt Through the 'Venice of the North'

Your self-guided treasure hunt Trail will take you on a journey through the historic and scenic towns of Birmingham, linking the past and present in an exciting circular route. As you follow the canal, you'll uncover sneaky clues hidden in historic buildings and modern landmarks, spanning over 200 years of history.

Starting in the bustling city centre, you'll soon leave behind the hustle and bustle and venture into the ancient secrets of the 'Venice of the North'. But beware-this Trail won't be easy. Ian and Diana Jones have always been one step ahead, and only the most daring adventurers will be able to decipher the clues and uncover the truth behind the legend of the Golden Gondolier.

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

The route is not friendly for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

Bring your four-legged friends along! This is a dog-friendly Trail but please be aware that one of the clues is set in an area of restricted access for dogs.

The closest long stay pay and display car parks to the Trail start point are at the Town Hall (B1 1TA) or The Mailbox (B1 1RD), both an eight-minute walk away. Or why not try Birmingham’s variety of transport options, with New Street Railway Station, bus stops, and tram stops all within a ten-minute walk of the start point?

There are some fantastic events in Birmingham’s calendar, all of which are great times to visit this brilliant city. However, you may find that some of the clues on this Trail become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact the Tourist Information Centre at the Library of Birmingham.

There are public toilets available towards Clues 05, 13 and 15, and the route passes several pubs, shops and a few cafes along the way.
