Detective Mystery Trail
The Mysterious Disappearance of Big Red!
There’s something fishy going on in Weymouth… and we’re not just talking about the seafood specials! Big Red – the town’s legendary, record-breaking lobster – has vanished from the harbourside shack, leaving behind only a few shattered shell fragments and some suspiciously slippery footprints.
Join crustacean-cracking legend DCI Chris Tayshun as he swaps his desk for the docks and ropes you in to help crack the case. Starting at Hope Square by Brewers Quay, you’ll scour the historic old town, scenic quayside and lively streets, following sneaky clues hidden on buildings, plaques and permanent features.
As you eliminate suspects and sift through the shell-shocking evidence, one question remains…
Who pinched Big Red – and is the town’s tastiest treasure gone for good?

Before You Set Off
Before You Set Off
PLEASE NOTE - This Trail used to be called the Weymouth Town Centre & Seafront Trail but has had a major rewrite in April 2025.
Navigating The Route
This is a circular Detective Mystery through Weymouth’s harbour, old town and quayside areas, with sleuths following pavements, paths and pedestrianised streets as they gather evidence to crack the case of the missing ‘Big Red’.
The investigation takes place on pavements, paths and pedestrian areas throughout, and where steps occur, alternative routes are available, making it suitable for both wheelchairs and pushchairs.
Important: You will be travelling through busy harbour areas, roads with traffic and waterside paths, so detectives should use crossings where available, stay alert at all times and keep younger team members under close supervision. Take extra care near the water’s edge and when navigating busier quayside sections.
Getting There
By car: Weymouth Old Town (West) Car Park (DT4 8LS) is the closest parking just behind Brewers Quay. For larger or cheaper options, Nothe Car Park (DT4 8UD) is around a 10-minute walk from the start.
By public transport: Weymouth town centre is well served by bus and rail links, with the harbour and start point within walking distance of key transport hubs.
Need the Loo?
Even top detectives need a comfort break during a long case! Toilets can be found on Cove Street near the start of your investigation, as well as later along the route near Clue 08, giving you a handy mid-case option too.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged detectives are welcome on the case 🐾
With a mix of town streets and quayside paths, it is a great outing for canine companions - just keep leads handy near roads, crowds and along the waterfront.
Food & Drink Stops
Cracking this case is hungry work! As most of the investigation takes place within the town, you will find plenty of cafés, pubs and shops along the route, making it easy to grab refreshments or supplies as you go.
You could even pick up something for a celebratory beach picnic once the case is closed - assuming Big Red hasn’t already made off with the snacks.
