Navigating The Route
This is a circular Treasure Hunt around Bognor Regis Seafront & Old Town, with Adventurers following the trail of a pirate crew from The Screaming Skull who mutinied, landed on Bognor Beach with a chest of booty and hid it - now you must use the map and clues found in a sealed jar to identify the treasure's secret location.
The quest covers approximately 2.5 miles and should take around 2.5 hours to complete. You'll explore streets, parks and gardens, follow the promenade with the sea on one side, pass the bandstand, classic amusement arcades, crazy golf and the area in front of the pier, then return along the promenade by the D-Day Beacon.
This Trail is wheelchair accessible and pushchair accessible. The route includes streets, parks and gardens, the promenade, a ramp by the seafront, steps or a ramp down from the bandstand area, some narrow lane sections and one section behind the Crazy Golf.
You will be crossing a number of roads, some busier than others, so use pedestrian crossings where available and take great care. By the sea, watch children and dogs at all times. On a hot day, pack water for your crew, and keep your eyes peeled as one clue refers to something that may or may not move depending on the weather.
Getting There
By car: Begin your treasure quest at the Regis Centre pay and display car park (PO21 1LD), using ///parent.indeed.navy. This car park is chargeable 8am to 6pm seven days per week. While the Regis Centre is being renovated, this is where your quest begins.
By public transport: Make your way to the Regis Centre pay and display car park (PO21 1LD), using ///parent.indeed.navy, to begin the adventure. The circular route brings you back to the start area once the pirate booty's secret location has been tracked down.
Need the Loo?
Public toilets can be found in the car park at the start and end, by Clue 01 and between Clues 09 and 10, and between Clues 11 and 12 - useful comfort stops for Treasure Seekers tackling a 2.5-hour seafront quest.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged Explorers can join the hunt, with a few seaside rules to remember. 🐾
Dogs are not allowed on the beach between Park Road and Gloucester Road from 1st May to 20th September. The route also includes road crossings, promenade sections and seafront areas, so keep canine crew members close around traffic and watch dogs carefully by the sea.
Food & Drink Stops
Pirate treasure is best pursued with proper provisions. There are plenty of pubs and cafes along the way, including a cafe in Hotham Park, the High Tide pub and the Coastal Coffee Co.
If the weather is fine, there are several great picnic spots too, including Hotham Park and the beach. The seafront also has classic amusement arcades if your crew fancies stretching the adventure beyond snacks and sandwiches.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Hotham Park
The route goes through Hotham Park and past Hotham Park House, making it an easy place to slow the expedition down. With a cafe, mini railway station and boating lake on the way, plus one of the best picnic spots on a fine day, it's a strong choice for giving Mini Explorers extra time ashore.
Bognor Regis Promenade
The famous Bognor Regis promenade is a big part of this quest, with the sea on one side and plenty of classic seaside atmosphere along the way. You'll pass the bandstand, amusement arcades, crazy golf and the area in front of the pier - ideal for a longer wander once the treasure map has done its work.
Steyne Gardens
Steyne Gardens adds a dash of old Bognor elegance to the hunt. No. 9 Steyne Gardens was built in 1824 and was used by 'posh' visitors to Bognor. The sea baths were in the basement, with hot, warm and cold bath prices listed in the text, and hot seawater could be sent to rooms for those less well positioned in society.
D-Day Beacon and Pier Area
The return leg uses the promenade by the D-Day Beacon and the pier area, which also brings you back towards public toilets on the way to the start. It is a handy final stretch for soaking up the seafront setting before your pirate crew heads for home.
