Your self-guided treasure hunt Trail will have you roaming through the heart of Beddgelert, where you can soak up the stunning sights of Snowdonia as you hunt for the crucial clues. Treasure Hunt Through the Heart of Beddgelert

Prepare for an exciting self-guided Treasure Hunt that will take you deep into the historic and scenic town of Beddgelert. As you journey through the village and its surroundings, you'll encounter sneaky clues hidden in permanent features, historic landmarks, and intriguing monuments.

According to legend, there were once two dragons who lay sleeping by a lake under the hill. The Red Dragon vanquished the White Dragon and returned to its lair to slumber in peace... Until now! A treasure map belonging to Merlin himself has been unearthed, leading to the fearsome dragon's lair. Can you crack the clues and track down the legendary beast?

Beware the dragon that sleeps below Dinas Emrys! Long, long ago, King Vortigern was building his castle on a hill above the village. Myrddin Emrys, the magical child who became Merlin, told the king that two dragons, one red and one white, lay sleeping by a lake under the hill. The king woke the dragons who then fought fiercely and bravely. The red dragon vanquished the white, who fled, leaving the red dragon to return to its slumbers beneath the hill.

The Red Dragon has been celebrated throughout Wales ever since and now, Fearless Explorers, a treasure map (believed to have been left by Merlin himself) has been found that leads to the lair of the fearsome Red Dragon. Are you brave enough to follow the Trail, solve the Clues and track down the fiery Red Dragon of myths and legends?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure to explore Beddgelert, there are a few things you need to know...

The route isn’t friendly for wheelchair users due to some uneven terrain encountered along the way, but those with light pushchairs should find it manageable.

Bring your four-legged friends along! Please note that one clue is set in a churchyard where pups are prohibited, so only bring your scout dog with you if a member of your treasure-hunting team is able to wait with them while the others crack this clue.

There are a number of pay and display car parks in Beddgelert, all within a five-minute walk of the Trail start point. The car parks can get quite busy, so we recommend arriving early to prepare for your quest.

There are some fantastic events in Beddgelert’s calendar, all of which are great times to visit this beautiful village. However, you may find that some of the Clues on this Trail may become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact Beddgelert Information Centre.

There are public toilets available towards the middle of the Trail and the route passes a few cafes and shops (and an ice cream parlour!) along the way.
