An Afternoon in London – Things to do around Borough Market and the Tate Modern in London

We had an afternoon to spare in London. And we certainly made the most of it!

Borough Market

Arriving at Borough Market, our senses went into overload. With eyes as big as saucers, we wandered past enormous polished fruits and vegetables. They were huge and in some cases very alien looking! The cheese stalls had giant wheels stacked high. The olive oil salesmen behind tables with their little bowls of golden liquid shouted “try me”!

It was a riot of colour and noise.

We escaped down a quiet alley (Stone Street), past Southwark Cathedral, The Clink and on to the river. I’d have liked to dawdle round the Cathedral and gawp at the contents of the Clink, but little hands were pulling to see the boats and the water.

The views as we reached the Thames were stunning in the sunlight. St. Paul’s to our left and the modern skyscrapers to our right.

Street Art

Wandering along the river bank we enjoyed the street art, buskers and performers until eventually we arrived at our next destination - the Tate Modern. We had timed tickets but we were several hours too early.

With lots to catch up on, we drank iced coffees in the Tate’s cafe and then moved on to Gail’s for tea and cake.

So we eventually went into the Tate - we were there to see the Olafur Eliasson In Real Life exhibition. The exhibits were amazing. Different, memorable and a truly immersive experience. We stumbled along a fog corridor, past our dancing reflections, down a kaleidoscope tunnel and lots more.

Loved it. There were lots of kids enjoying it especially at the end when there was a whole heap of stuff to build models out of!

Back out in the sunshine, it was time for cocktails as afternoon slipped into evening!
