  • YOUR CASE

Residents are reeling after Bobby Bitter, director of a local brewery, was found floating, dead, in a vat of foamy beer. Sergeant Stipple, the investigating officer, has announced that foul play is suspected. The man was already dead when he entered the vat! Rumours abound that Bobby was about to relinquish the brewery’s proud Yorkshire ownership. If you can find out who the guilty party is, you could win a prize!

    Tadcaster Murder Mystery

Thriving Tadcaster, host to a lively market every Thursday, lies on the River Wharfe between Leeds and York. Founded by the Romans, who named it Calcaria (place of limestone), it has long been associated with the brewing industry due to its high quality water, and is home to no fewer than three breweries! Quarried for centuries, the limestone has provided stone for many famous buildings, including York Minster.

The delightful market town contains many historical and architectural treasures such as the 12th Century St Mary's Church, with its decorated gargoyles and pinnacles and nearby popple-wells (freshwater springs). Other riches include the remains of a Norman Castle, the Ark, a Merchant House originally built in the late 15th Century, and many buildings from the Georgian and other eras. Just outside the town is the impressive and imposing multi-arched viaduct, built by George Hudson in the mid 19th Century.

Whilst on the Trail, you could sup an energizing cuppa in one of the quaint tea rooms, or sample a refreshing beer or two in the abundance of pubs and inns. Feeling energised, why not then venture further afield? Beauty abounds in the landscape surrounding Tadcaster. Use it as a stepping stone to pastures new!

This pleasurable circular Murder Mystery Walking Trail is approximately 2 miles long and can be comfortably completed within two hours. Regrettably, narrow footpaths make this Trail unsuitable for wheelchairs.
