The Case of the Blue Sceptre Stone!

26/03/2011

Eight local children and their parents recently met and worked together to create the first ever Bewdley Maths Trail. The group met on 5 consecutive Thursdays throughout March 2011 at St Anne’s Primary School and were led by David and Amanda Ingham from the award winning treasure hunt company, Treasure Trails and ably assisted by Clare Bevans from St Anne’s Primary School, Bewdley.

The project was conceived and funded by Worcestershire County Council Extended Schools team and involved working with children from the four Bewdley Primary schools (Upper Arley, Far Forest Lea, Bewdley Primary School and St Anne’s) to research, write and produce a Maths Trail which will be launched on Saturday 30th April at the start of the Discover Bewdley weekend.

A competition was launched to all Year 6 pupils in the four primary schools to design the front cover of the Trail and the winning entry was created by Tabitha Jackson from Upper Arley whose design features the unmistakeable Bewdley Bridge.  Tabitha was thrilled to win and delighted that her design was chosen from over 40 entries.  Jodie McConnell, who at the time was the Extended Services Co-ordinator for Bewdley, Stourport, Haybridge and Hagley Catholic pyramids explained the reasoning behind the competition.  “We wanted everyone to have a chance to be involved in creating the Maths Trail and we are very excited about how it is all taking shape”.  I can’t wait to see the finished project and have a chance to solve the Case of the Blue Sceptre Stone!”

At the end of series of workshops the children and their parents were asked to evaluate the project.  One mother, Deb Harvey commented that she “thought the organisation of the course was exceptional and very professional” and she added that she would “change nothing about how the project was executed and hoped that it would be repeated so that others would get a chance to get involved”.  When asked what she enjoyed most about creating the Trail, Polly Rumley from Bewdley Primary School said “working with people from other schools that we'll be going to high school with”.

The Trail will be available for sale from Saturday 30th April at the Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre in Load Street at a cost of £3.  The money raised by the sale of the Trail will firstly cover the cost of printing and any profit after that will be returned to the schools involved.  The Trail will be suitable for all ages from about 5 years old up to 95 and will give groups and families a couple of hours entertainment exploring the beautiful Bewdley town centre, Jubilee Gardens and Community Orchard.  Participants will see things they have never noticed before!
