YOUR MISSION
The evil scientist, Dr B Low, is planning to release a concoction into the atmosphere which will prevent the wind from blowing, thus causing the windmill to grind to a halt. Can you prove your metal by solving the clues to discover the code to neutralise his twisted scheme and save our historical windmill?
Wilton Windmill
Set within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wilton Windmill stands high at the eastern end of the undulating landscape of the Vale of Pewsey. From the picturesque village of Wilton, this Trail follows Wilton Water to the towpath opposite the Crofton Pumping Station on the Kennet and Avon Canal where you’ll enjoy scenes of canal life and possibly even catch sight of a lock in operation! Then follow the Roman Road over the ridge before ascending to Wilton Windmill for an insight into an old rural tradition. Allow 2-3 hours for this circular 2.5 mile Trail on which clues are clustered at key points of interest so you can relax and enjoy the countryside in-between.
The Trail starts at The Swan Inn (SN8 3SS) in Wilton village, just off the A338 between Hungerford and Burbage (not be confused with the town of the same name west of Salisbury). With some steep ascents and descents this Trail is not ideal for those with bad knees and is regrettably unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Please take care around the canal's unprotected waters, around canal and windmill equipment and on lanes with no pavements!
The Wilton Windmill site is open all year so this Trail can be completed at anytime. As a bonus ... the mill itself is open on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays between 2 and 5pm, Easter until the end of September. For details just click on the windmill image on the right.
