  • YOUR CASE

A chance discovery of an old document has sent treasure hunters rushing to the former stronghold of Cricklade. It is rumoured that Athelstan may have brought more than an army and saintly bones to England in the 10th Century! Solve the clues to find the location of the mysterious hoard and you might win a cash prize!

    Cricklade

Bordering the Cotswolds, Cricklade is the first town on the River Thames and the only Wiltshire town situated on its banks. Founded by King Alfred to help defend the Kingdom of Wessex from the invading Danes, the town is often referred to as “the most intact example of a late Saxon new town in Britain”.

This circular 1.4 mile walking Treasure Hunt explores the heart of the town within the former walls of the Saxon stronghold. You’ll find tranquil waterside scenes, sites of historical note and architecturally attractive buildings offering insights into the town’s past.

Predominantly flat terrain and frequently lowered kerbs make this Trail suitable for all levels of physical ability. There are plenty of places for refreshment from High Street cafes to pub gardens and hotel courtyards. Alternatively you might detour to find a picnic spot along the Thames Path or on the remains of Saxon ramparts. Cricklade's Latin motto is ‘In Loco Delicioso’, which means 'in a pleasant place' so allow around 1.5 hours plus time to explore or relax!

    WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY
... a good walk around Cricklade - even going to parts you don't normally go to! It's also good to actually walk and notice things around you - which you wouldn't notice if just walking.
