YOUR CASE
Soon after breaking news at the dig, Kara the visiting archaeologist has been found dead in the Circle. With conflicting rumours of hidden treasures and alleged plans for the sale of protected land, the circumstances are very suspicious. If you can uncover the truth about who took the archaeologist’s life, and how they did so, you could win a prize!
Avebury
One of England's most spiritual places, the ancient Avebury complex includes the largest prehistoric stone circle in Europe and is a recognised British World Heritage site. Dating back some 5000 years, it is older than Stonehenge and its full purpose remains a mystery. At the heart of the site, the great stone circle encompasses part of the picturesque village.
Starting from nearby Avebury Trusloe, this 2 mile walking Trail approaches Avebury from meadowland to the south. With a Murder Mystery theme, treasure hunt style clues are set in and around the village with its thatched buildings and historic church. Walk amongst the stones and sense the history as you walk around the encircling ancient henge with key points of interest highlighted on the way.
Sensible shoes are recommended for footpaths across uneven and sometimes slippery grassland. With fences and gates, the site is ideal for children. However, care should be taken crossing the main road from one quadrant to another. Refreshments are available at the Circle Restaurant, the Red Lion or nearby at The Waggon and Horses at Beckhampton. Managed by The National Trust, the site includes toilets, shops and interesting museums. Avebury is not swamped by crowds but try to avoid visiting around the summer solstice when it can be very busy.
Pushchair users should find the route manageable although steps will have to be negotiated at various points. This Trail is not considered wheelchair friendly; whilst there is wheelchair access to many areas, it’s across grass and doesn’t allow for a flowing route of the circle.
