Measuring some 27 miles long by 5 miles wide, Jura is the wildest and emptiest of all Scotland's inhabited islands and the largest without a direct ferry link. The population of around 200 lives mainly in the village of Craighouse and in a number of other small settlements on the east side of the island. Wildlife abounds with over 5000 red deer living on the island along with otters, seals and golden eagles. The landscape is dominated by the paps, 3 quartzite mountains rising to over 2500 feet.
The Jura Treasure Hunt Trail leads you on a route exploring the village of Craighouse with a loop taking in the old crofting township of Keils. Starting and finishing at the islands only hotel, the 3 mile route follows both paved and unpaved roads and is suitable for pushchairs, although wheelchair users may struggle on some of the rough tracks. You should allow 2 - 3 hours to complete the Trail.
