Borders Treasure Trails

Writing Trip 2009

With the Scottish Borders at the extremes of my area of responsibility I came up with a plan to reduce my carbon footprint and ensure that trails were completed without interuption or the need to be concerned about driving home with sore feet!! I would take a week away from every day life and dedicate a week to writing treasure trails in the Borders.

With some persuasion, trail setter, Jen agreed to join me and act as my sanity check and keep me company.

I didn't tell her that this isn't a multi-national and that it will be a budget trip!

Saturday

An early start packing up the car for a week of Treasure Trailing and, perhaps, a bit of holiday in the Scottish Borders. First stop Edinburgh for a team event. The original plan was for 35 participants, but it’s always the way, people pull out and we were left with half that number (well one was 8 months old therefore he can be the half!!).

All in I feel it was a good day, although next time the route will be shorter to allow for the side-tracking to the many bars on the trail. The weather was kind and the rain stayed away until we were doing the results just before 5pm.

A quick clear up and off to Melrose where I will be pitching the tent for a few days to start with. Shame I got into the wrong lane on a roundabout with the police behind me, spotting my, unusually, hesitant driving they stopped me for a chat!!! I got lucky and they recognised that I am not normally so crap, in the end I tried to sell them a Treasure Trail – you have to take opportunities!!!

Tent pitched, complete with a beer to assist us it was an early night – last night was the end of season hockey dinner so there wasn’t much sleep (not sure soft drinks allowed me to appreciate the dinner in the same way as the others).
