YOUR CASE
The legend of highwayman Stan Dandyliver, who was hung on Gibbet Hill, tells of how he was ridiculed by his fellow highwaymen because he would hold up stagecoaches on foot. He claimed that he just hadn't got around to stealing a horse yet, he however was very successful and amassed a great fortune, the secret hiding place of which can be revealed by solving the clues dotted around Haslemere.
Haslemere
Haslemere is a small, charming, old country town, nestling in the splendid Surrey Hills, in the south-west of Surrey, on the Sussex-Hampshire border.
This ancient market town is full of picturesque, antique properties, and has managed to avoid the blight, brought on too many towns by High Street Names. Many of the shops and businesses are still family owned and run. Haslemere is well known for its antique shops.
There is a fantastic museum with many interesting exhibits including an egyptian mummy with it's big toe peeping through the bandages.
Haslemere derived its name from the hazel trees which surrounded a lake (or mere) which may have been on a site between Derby Road and the High Street. The lake was drained many, many years ago. There is a spring in West Street (source of the original lake) which flows into the river Wey and eventually the river Thames.
The Trail is just under 2 miles long and should take about two and a half hours to complete. It is mainly on pavements, though the last section will use a footpath that crosses a field, so appropriate footwear is recommended, especially if the weather is wet.
