  • YOUR CASE

It has come to light that some of the navvies who dug the Uttoxeter Canal by day spent their nights robbing the local gentry's homes. They hid their loot in the area but never came back for it. Is it hidden in Hollington, buried in Bramshall, stashed in Stramshall, or, most likely, underground in Uttoxeter? Solve the clues to find its hiding place and you stand a chance of a prize by way of reward.

    Uttoxeter

Uttoxeter has been an important town in East Staffordshire since Saxon times; its name has been spelt 79 different ways in that time! In 1648 the Market Place witnessed the final surrender of the Civil War when the Royalist army yielded to the Parliamentarians. Formerly the site of an important livestock market, it is now the home town of JCB and Fox's Biscuits, whilst Alton Towers is only a few minutes' drive away. St. Mary's RC Church was Augustus Pugin's first design before he moved on to greater things with the Houses of Parliament. The local newspaper is nicknamed "The Stunner", allegedly due to its reputation for printing news after people have already heard it. Today, this town of elegant buildings and a famous racecourse is well worth a visit. Half-timbered and Georgian buildings sit side by side, and the Market Place provides a fascinating mix of days gone by and modern life.

This 1.75 mile walking Treasure Hunt should take around 2 hours to complete. Apart from a few steps in the churchyard, it can be completed by wheelchair, and the whole Trail is around the town centre. There are a number of car parks, although on market days they can fill up quickly, and many places for refreshments to be purchased.

    WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY
I've lived in the town for 60 years and still learned things I never knew. Really enjoyable, and my grandson and I chatted about local history the whole time.
