  • YOUR CASE

A chance discovery of an old document has sent treasure hunters rushing to Penkridge in search of the missing hoard of the notorious highwayman, Roddy Baston, who was captured nearby in 1755. He refused to answer questions, however, and went to the gallows with his secret. The document was supposedly written by his lover, Marie Gold, and hints that the location of the loot can be found in the village. Happy hunting!

    Penkridge

Penkridge has a lively village centre that retains an old-world charm, having escaped the curse of modernisation. At Christmas, the Victorian street market could not find a more perfect setting. The Staffs and Worcester Canal that runs through the village adds to its appeal: in the summer, the flotillas of narrow boats hint at days gone by. The village is thought to date from Roman times and once was famous throughout Britain for its horse sales. As a result, there are far more old coaching inns and hostelries than you might expect, and many of their names recall those days. Today, the iron horse of the West Coast Mainline railway soars over the village on its impressive viaduct, while the M6 motorway also runs close by. A village full of surprises, this Trail can only show you the way - take time to explore on your own.

It takes around 2 hours to complete this walking Treasure Trail which is 2 miles long. Parking is free and there are plenty of places where you can stop for refreshments, while a large play area is very close to the finish.
Unfortunately, the restricted access to the canal and the sometimes muddy state of the towpath if there has been rain means that this Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs, although the village is still worth exploring for itself.
