YOUR MISSION
The Drakelow Tunnels, near Kinver, were set up as a refuge for Government during the Cold War. A film company wants to stage an underground car chase in them and will pay you thousands of pounds if you let them in, but the code to open the massive doors has been lost. Can you rediscover it in time, open up these secret bunkers and make a fortune ?
Kinver
Kinver lies right on the southern border of Staffordshire, to the west of The River Stour and the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal. Kinver Edge overlooks the town, and a walk up to its Iron Age hill fort rewards those who make it with wonderful far-reaching views. The Edge is also the site of the Holy Austin Rock Houses. These homes are cut into the rock and may well be thousands of years old. Amazingly, they were lived in until the 1960's and are now looked after by the National Trust. Kinver has some very impressive buildings, with timber-framing blending with Georgian elegance. Small shops dominate the busy High Street; take time to explore after your Trail.
There are several free car parks signposted off the High Street and all are suitable for this Trail. If you are driving to the church, the whole route is suitable for pushchairs. The stretch along the canal may be a problem for wheelchair users, but they could return to the top of The Holloway whilst the rest of a group press on and meet again at that point. After completing the Trail, you will be spoilt for choice with places to eat and drink, rounding off a memorable day in a fascinating village.
