YOUR MISSION
For years Britain's potters strove in vain to learn how to make Chinese porcelain, eventually producing bone china instead. But did the great experimenter Josiah Wedgwood discover the secret? Can you unravel the clues and reveal where he hid his formula by discovering a code to a box allegedly locked away by the Royal Society? If you can, you could become rich!
'Twixt Keele and Maer
The village of Keele has a timeless feel, despite being the site of a famous University. As you drive from there to the other locations in the Trail you must first cross the pulsing artery of the M6 before diving down a leafy valley that is far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Note the coats of arms on many of the buildings both in Keele and en route, a reminder of the important families that were lords of the manor in this area of North Staffordshire. When you reach Maer, once the home of Wedgwoods and other famous potters, you feel that you have stepped back even further in time and half expect to hear the carriages rumbling along the road. Throughout the Trail, go slowly and look around you. There is much more to see than simply answering the clues. Finally, a cup of tea and a great piece of cake awaits you as a reward for all your endeavours!
At times there are no footpaths on this Trail, so you need to be very alert, especially if you have children or a dog with you. The few steps up to both churches are no barrier to a pushchair but unfortunately prevent a wheelchair from experiencing some of the Trail's highlights. Refreshments and toilets are located at the mid-point and end of the Trail.
