  • YOUR CASE

The riches of The Chase have long been the wildlife, the timber and the coal, but now you have heard that when Admiral Anson, ancestor of Lord Lichfield of nearby Shugborough Hall, sailed around the world 1740-44, one of his crew brought back a sack of gold that he buried nearby. Unfortunately, he died shortly afterwards and the site's location was lost. Can you strike gold by following the clues and finding his hiding place?

    The Northern Chase

Cannock Chase is England's smallest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Within its boundaries can be found ancient oak woods and open heathland and forstry plantations, while history appears around every corner. At the weekend it is a mecca for mountain bikers, along with walkers, horse riders and birdwatchers. The herds of deer give an added bonus, with fallow, red and muntjac to be seen by those who tsake the time to sit quietly and wait. In winter, large herds can be seen close to the roads and the houses around the edge of the area, so always keep your speed down and your ewyes open.
In two World Wars the area played host to thousands of trainee soldiers and aircrew, while beneath your feet are the remains of centuries of coal mining. Today, this beautiful area, with over 2 million people within 45 minutes' drive, is the largest untapped reserve of sand and gravel in Europe. Enjoy it whilst it is cared for and managed for everyone's enjoyment as you delve into its quiet corners and far-reaching views.

This driving Treasure Hunt can be completed either by car or cycle, or even on foot by the dedicated! Around 12 miles long, it also incorporates some 2.25 miles of walking and in total it can be completed in 2.25 hours. Some of the walking is off-road so wear suitable footwear. A camera is a good idea: if you are quiet, you stand a good chance of seeing some of the Chase's numerous deer, let alone other wildlife. There are cafes en route, especially midway, and the museum at the conclusion makes an ideal addition to your visit, so allow at least half a day in total.
