  • YOUR CASE

A gold coin dating from the time of King John, who granted a Market Charter to Burton-on-Trent in 1200, has been recovered from a well on the Washlands. This area around the River Trent floods regularly, so while the weather is fine, treasure hunters are out in force, seeking more valuable booty. Can you outwit them all, follow the clues and find the golden hoard before anyone else?

    Burton Washlands

Burton-on-Trent is justifiably famous for its beers and today the town's skyline is still dominated by breweries. It is also the home of Marmite, and, love it or hate it, Burton makes it! Branston, a suburb of the town, is famous for yet another addition to the table, so at least two ingredients of a typical ploughman's lunch are local products. The River Trent runs past the town, allowing for the open green spaces of the Washlands to be only moments away from the busy shopping centre. It also boasts canoe and rowing clubs, while fishermen enjoy their sport only a short walk from home. Grand Victorian architecture appears round every corner, and you will find this a different town to many. That is especially true when the scent of the breweries at work fills the air with a rich, heady aroma as you walk around!

This walking Treasure Hunt Trail is suitable for all; wheelchairs and pushchairs will find that most of the Trail is on level footpaths, making this 2.25 mile Trail well suited to them. Something over two hours should be ample time to allow, and there is a wide choice of picnic sites, play areas and refreshments en route. Adults could even continue on to the National Brewing Centre to discover just why Burton beers are the best around!
