  • YOUR CASE

In 1848, the Bute explorer Neil Hamish Campbell vanished while on an expedition to the Caribbean. Last year, on a remote island, skeletal remains were found clutching an old map with clues to the location of buried treasure. It seems Campbell had become a pirate and named the island Bute, after his native isle. Can you follow the trail of clues around the original Bute to find out where on the island he buried his treasure?

    Isle of Bute

The Isle of Bute rewards its visitors with variety, all of it easily accessible.
The Highland boundary fault passes through the middle of Bute, where the freshwater Loch Fad almost splits the island in two. The southern half is made up of farmland, typical of the Scottish Lowlands, while the north is hilly and mostly uninhabited. The principle town is Rothesay, a Victorian seaside resort with stunning examples of architecture from that period.

The Bute Treasure Hunt Trail leads you on a circuit of the island. Starting from Rothesay, you will visit Ascog, Kilchattan Bay, St Blane's Chapel, Ettrick Bay and Port Bannatyne. If you are feeling fit, you could easily cycle the route of the Trail in a day. Unfortunately, some sections of the Trail are unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, especially the section that visits St Blane's Chapel.
Total driving/cycling distance is 28 miles, total walking distance is 2.5 miles.
Allow 4 hours if driving or all day if cycling.
