Linlithgow
Within easy reach of Edinburgh and the Scottish central belt Linlithgow is home to the earliest surviving Scottish royal palace. Also the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots, the palace stands over the Linlithgow loch and 'the peel'.
Also of importance in Linlithgow's history is the union canal which runs through Linlithgow. The canal opened in 1822 to provide a link between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
This circular spy trail takes you around some diverse areas of Linlithgow. There is a canal side walk as well as some time to stroll through part of the main town before finishing up at the historical palace.
The trail is approx 2 miles long and will take 2 hours to complete. There are 2 uphill climbs in the route and one diversion route for wheelchairs is detailed in the trail booklet. Midway through the trail you enter grounds where the gate is locked late evening and at 6pm on a Sunday. It is therefore advised that you do not begin the trail later than 4.30pm.
