  • YOUR CASE

In 1683, Red Flint, a notorious and successful pirate sailed up the River Ythan in his boat, the Cloudy Damsel, having escaped the authorities who were pursuing him. Arriving in Ellon he married a local cook Sal M'Nella and they lived out their days quietly but comfortably in an old cottage. Renovations of the cottage revealed an old map showing where the remains of Red Flint's treasure is hidden. Can you solve the clues to discover where it's buried?

    Ellon

It’s amazing how we walk around with our eyes closed sometimes without appreciating our surroundings. Our Ellon walking buried treasure Trail has been designed with this in mind and will show you the best bits of this historical town in a fun and entertaining way.
Ellon is a very long established settlement in the north east of Scotland and was described by the ancient Gaels as "the land at the bend in the ocean". As early as 4th Century BC there is some evidence that this fording point on the Ythan river had resulted in a small Pictish settlement being established.
Today Ellon provides an ideal base for visitors as it is the centre of "Castle Country" as well as being close to magnificent beaches and coastal villages. The town is also a good centre for birdwatchers with several nesting sites and cliff nesting sites nearby.

This circular, walking buried treasure Trail takes you from the town's picturesque centre along the River Ythan, through its leafy parks and historic square. The Trail is approximately 2¼ miles long and takes roughly 2 hours. The Trail is suitable for both pushchair and wheelchair users - although please note that the riverside path can become rather muddy in wet weather.
