  • YOUR CASE

Faringdon House is famous for its brightly dyed pink and purple pigeons, a tradition started by the late Lord Berners. Their pretty plummage, however, doesn't stop the pigeons from getting up to mischief. When Lady Glittersmuch came to stay at Faringdon House, one of the pigeons flew off with her exquisite diamond necklace! Can you discover where the pigeon dropped this priceless treasure?

    Faringdon

Faringdon is a historic market town set in beautiful countryside. Historically within the boundaries of Berkshire, but now within the Vale of White Horse in Oxfordshire, it is located on the edge of the Thames Valley, between the River Thames and the Ridgeway.

Faringdon, which means 'fern covered hill', was the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, and Alfred the Great had his castle there.

King John gave the town a royal charter in 1216 for a weekly market, which continues to this day in the Market place. During the Civil War, Roundhead Sir Robert Pye found himself a prisoner in his own home, Faringdon House, which dates back to 1730.

The 17th century Town Hall remains the focal point of the town, surrounded by a collection of Georgian-fronted inns and shops in the market-place. However, no visit to Faringdon would be complete without a walk up Folly Hill.

This Trail is a walking Treasure Trail of two miles, that will take approximately two hours. It is not suitable for wheelchairs. Light pushchairs should be able to complete the Trail, but please be aware it involves two moderately steep hills. Treasure Trails recommends sensible footwear as there is some areas of the Trail not on pavements or paths.
