  • YOUR CASE

In 1644, notorious and successful pirate, Ivor Fortune, sailed up the River Thames in his boat, Ye Olde Rosie, intent on escaping the authorities pursuing him. Arriving in Oxfordshire, Ivor sold Ye Olde Rosie, married a local pub landlady, and settled down to a life of relative obscurity in a cottage in Burford. Centuries later, workmen renovating the cottage have uncovered an old map showing where Ivor buried the remains of his wealth. Can you find it?

    Burford

Known as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', Burford is located in Northern Oxfordshire, just 18 miles west of Oxford City and 22 miles southeast of Cheltenham.

Nestling along the slope of the hill down through the trees to the River Windrush, this small medieval town is steeped in history and rich in architectural heritage. With wonderful old stone buildings, a medieval bridge, and a charming and characterful town centre, Burford is justifiably described as one of the most picturesque towns in England.

The broad main street is lined with dignified old houses, ancient cottages and shopfronts which appear to have changed little since Tudor times. There are wonderful little side streets to explore, old pubs, tea and antique shops aplenty. The 15th century parish church of St. John Baptist is magnificent, and is testimony to bygone riches based on wool.

This is a Treasure Hunt Trail that takes you on a fascinating 1.5 miles walk around Burford's town centre. It will take about an hour and a half to complete. It is suitable for wheelchairs, but please be aware there are some steep hills in Burford that you will need to negotiate whilst doing the Trail. Parking is available on the high street, or in the Guildenford car park, which is signposted from the High Street.
