YOUR CASE
Descendants of Lord and Lady Muck, the previous owners of West Retford Hall and bestowers of the Hall grounds, which are now part of Kings Park, have uncovered a badly damaged map amidst some old family papers. They believe it will provide information on where the eccentric pair hid their missing fortunes. Your job is to help them find this location and perhaps win a cash prize in the process.
Retford
Retford possibly got it's name from an ancient ford crossing the River Idle. The waters of the river being red in colour due to the disturbance of the clay by passing horses, carts, livestsock and pedestrians; Redforde. Being originally two towns East and West Retford, the two amalgamated into a single borough in the 1900`s.
With the building of the Great North Road and the Chesterfield Canal the town flourished. The Victorian Romanesque Town Hall was designed by Bellamy and Hardy, and built by Thomas Hopkinson. You will see the initials TH on many impressive buildings on this Trail.
A fine market town, with elegant architecture an award winning Kings Park, good food and varied shops. A real revelation to us and hopefully, to you too!
This Trail is around 2 miles in length and should take about 2 hours to complete. Suitable for pushchairs (though entry and exit to canal may require the collapse of pushchairs). Some restriction on opening times to the park. Generally 9am-8pm or dusk. Kings Park is a great place for a kick about, why not take a picnic?
