YOUR MISSION
A band of soldiers from the Newark garrison, acting on behalf of King Charles I, have captured the tower at the church of St.Nicholas. From this vantage point they plan to bombard Nottingham Castle and capture it for the King.
By discovering the code to their gunpowder store, you can thwart their plans.
Nottingham Castle
The first Norman Castle was built on this site in 1067, by William the Conqueror. For centuries the castle served as one of the most important in England due to its central location. It is associated with the legend of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, and was the site of a decisive siege when Richard the Lionheart returned from the Crusades, attacking the Castle using siege machines brought back from Jerusalem. Roger Mortimer, consort of Queen Isabella, is said to have escaped through the many caves that riddle Castle Rock - one is known as Mortimer's Hole. During the English Civil War, the Castle and the city were held by the Parliamentarians. The present Ducal Mansion was built during the reign of Charles II, after the restoration of the monarchy. The Trail begins at the Castle gates and continues via the canal, passing many historical landmarks. You will also find shops, restaurants and public houses along your route.
The Trail is suitable for both pushchairs and wheelchairs. Alternative routes are outlined for wheelchair access where appropriate. This Trail is approximately 2 miles long and should take around 2 hours. It can be expensive to park in the city, so why not use the park & ride service, or even arrive by train? It's cheaper, greener and more relaxing - after all, you are having a day out!
