YOUR CASE
The body of Arthur Pint, landlord of The Stumble Inn, has been found on the banks of the River Trent. Who could have perpetrated such an act? Had Arthur upset one too many people this time? Was it the disgruntled waitress he sacked, or the rowdy group of lads he barred the other night or perhaps his casanova ways had finally got him into trouble? Your job is to find out who the culprit is by solving the clues that have been left around Burton Joyce and Bulcote. You could win a reward!
Burton Joyce and Bulcote
Burton Joyce is a large village situated on the A612, a major road taking traffic into Nottingham, and a commuter belt village on the main rail line into the city. But if you get off the busy road you discover a vibrant village centre with lots of history. Burton Joyce is spread out into the side of a series of low hills which start at Nottingham Castle and finish three miles on the other side of Burton Joyce. The village sits on the River Trent and it is this location that has provided its history. Historically the river was the 'water motorway', with Burton Joyce providing travellers with places to stay, eat, drink and trade. This spot would have been an ideal location for an encampment with excellent defensive qualtities - clear vision all around the area combined with superb transport options provided by the River Trent. Bulcote, in comparison, is a tiny village. Situated next to Burton Joyce it has one of the prettiest churches, the 'little church on the hill'. A farming village, it derived its name from cattle farming. The word 'cote' is an ancient term for shelter. Bulcote can be traced back to 1086 and is recorded in the Doomesday Book as having a larger population than Burton Joyce. Sherwood Forest would have stretched this far and this area would have been the most south easternly part of the forest.
The Trail takes you through the village centre of Burton Joyce, into the village of Bulcote and along the River Trent, which on a nice day makes an ideal place to have a picnic. You will also be crossing the railway line. It is around two miles long and will take approximately two hours to complete. Suitable for light pushchairs, however, they may have to be collapsed to get through some of the kissing gates. Unfortunately these gates make the Trail unsuitable for wheelchairs.
