YOUR CASE
Recent excavations near to Hexham Abbey have uncovered a casket buried by Halfdene the Dane in 875. It appears the dastardly Dane had been so busy burning and plundering Hexham he had mislaid his map which he used to locate his chest of treasure accumulated from previous ventures. The map has been discovered hidden in the lining of the casket and it shows many locations on an island. Can you find the treasure?
Hexham
The Trail will give you the chance to see several sides of the picturesque town. It starts near to the Tourist Information Centre and includes many of the notable buildings in the town. For those of you getting there with the help of sat nav the post code for the starting point is NE46 1QE. Hexham is still an important market town for the Tynedale area. Hexham Abbey dominates the town and its origin goes back to 674 when it was founded as a monastery by Saint Wilfrid. The town has been attacked and burnt down by Viking and Scottish raiders at different times. In more peaceful times Hexham was renowned for its leather, in particular a type of glove known as Hexham Tans which were hand made and exported around the world.
The Trail is suitable for pushchairs. A self-propelled wheelchair user would need help to get up two steep hills.
