Built by John de Courcy in 1177, conqueror of east Ulster, and garrisoned until 1928, this is a striking feature of the landscape from land, sea and air.Carrickfergus Castle greets all visitors with its strength and menace. It represents over 800 years of military might. Besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French, the Castle saw action right up to World War II.
Carrickfergus stands on the shores of Belfast Lough; the area is full of exciting places to discover and fascinating buildings to see. The Trail is easy going with gravel tracks and tarmac roads; this Trail is suitable for all ages and will give everyone a chance to learn some interesting facts. You will finish at the town hall where you will have to make the short walk back to the start point at the civic centre.
This walking treasure trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The trail is 2 miles in length and 2 hours in duration.
