YOUR CASE
A recent cliff fall has uncovered an ancient map that purports to show the location of treasure plundered from one of the many shipwrecks along this part of the coast. Unfortunately, the island it relates to has long since disappeared under the rising sea levels. Can you help local diver, Hugh Jalungs, pinpoint the precise location so that he can swiftly, and easily, recover the treasure and return it to its rightful owners?
Happisburgh
Happisburgh is a pretty Norfolk coastal village that is probably best known for its striking red and white lighthouse. Over the years the village has suffered badly from coastal erosion with a number of houses being lost to the sea (with the period of 1992-2004 being particularly bad where the cliff face was eroded back, by the sea, over 100 yards inland and forming the large bay to the south of the village). New sea defences have slowed the rate of erosion but there are still a number of houses under threat. Don't leave it too long to undertake this Trail!
This is a walking Trail in the Treasure Hunt format. It is approximately 1.7 miles long and you should allow 1.5 hours to complete it. The ground underfoot is generally good and level throughout and is considered to be suitable for both pushchairs and wheelchairs. There are areas where additional caution should be taken, in particular when in close proximity to the cliff edges or where you are required to walk along a road on which there is no pavement.
Happisburgh can be found along the B1159, midway between Mundesley and Stalham. The Trail starts in the new Beach Road car park (NR12 0PR). Parking charges may apply.
**PLEASE NOTE** If you have a copy of Version 1-4 (incl) of this Trail then please check the 2011 Trail Trouble page (see link on Norfolk Home Page) for details on critical changes to the start point (which also affects clues clues 1 and 2).
