Treasure Hunt Trail
Help Hunt for Haughty Heidi's Hidden Hoard!
Oh, what a calamity… Heidi Taway, the smug treasure hunter, has found herself in a right soggy situation! She would often boast about being so clever for burying her lifetime's stash in the Gwash valley, out of reach of other fortune seekers. Well, she had a point as the valley was later flooded thus submerging her treasures deep underwater! Even though Heidi insists she's an expert diver, she failed her Grade 1 swimming certificate. She has drawn what she claims is the 'greatest treasure map known to mankind' though, along with a series of clues revealing the saturated spot. Intrepid Explorer Society (IES) have now got their hands on the latest diving gear, making these goodies recoverable. With their dive team on standby, IES need YOU to work out where Heidi's waterlogged wealth was concealed.

Important Information
Thinking of tackling this quest on two wheels? 🚴♂️
If you decide to use a bicycle, you’ll need to cycle the entire route between and around the villages, which includes stretches on busy roads. You’ll also need to factor in the return journey from Normanton back to Hambleton, so careful planning is essential before setting off.
For most explorers, this Trail is best enjoyed by car, with short walks at each stop.
Navigating The Route
This is a driving Treasure Hunt around the south shore of Rutland Water, guiding explorers between a series of villages including Hambleton, Manton, Wing, Edith Weston and Normanton.
At each location, you’ll park up and follow short walking routes along pavements, village lanes and clear paths to uncover your clues. Some areas have limited pavements and narrow roads, so take care when walking and keep a close eye out for traffic.
Getting There
Hambleton Village (LE15 8TL) is your official starting point, with parking near the church as you enter the village. Parking here and at other stops along the route is on-street parking, with a large free car park at the final stop.
Need the Loo?
Even the boldest adventurers need a quick pit stop! Toilets can be found at Normanton Car Park at the end of the Trail, and at Egleton if you choose to follow the option detour.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged explorers who also like car journeys and short walks on leads are welcome on this quest, with the exception of the nature reserve at Egleton, which is an optional detour stop.
Food & Drink Stops
Planning ahead is key on this adventure! Refreshment options are limited between villages, though you may find a few family-friendly pubs along the route. There’s also a village shop in Edith Weston for supplies, and a café at the final stop for post-quest treats.
It’s a great idea to bring snacks or a picnic, especially as the shores of Rutland Water at the end make a perfect spot to relax and refuel after your quest.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Rutland Water & Big Views
The reservoir at the end is the star of the show, with wide-open water views, wildlife and plenty of scenic spots to pause and soak it all in.
Nature, Wildlife & Birdwatching
If you take the optional detour to Egleton, you’ll find the Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre - a fantastic spot for wildlife lovers, with hides, trails and plenty to discover.
Normanton Church & Lakeside Landmarks
Near the end of your quest, Normanton Church sits right on the water’s edge — a striking and unusual sight with a fascinating history. It’s well worth exploring once the treasure has been found.
