YOUR MISSION
In the late 18th century Manchester mill owner Titus Hardgrind created a rain-making machine that would provide a constant supply of rain and the perfect conditions for spinning cotton in his mills. Great for the mill owners but not so good for the people of Manchester who have been under a cloud ever since. Find the code to switch off the machine and allow Manchester to bask under a cloudless sky and you may win a prize!
Manchester Castlefield
On this Trail you must find the answers to clues spread around Manchester city centre and Castlefield which will help you to work out the code to de-activate Titus Hardgrind's rain-making machine. You may win a cash prize if you submit the correct answer to the puzzle!
This Trail explores Manchester's rich history, from its Roman origins through to its transformation in the 18th and 19th centuries as the industrial powerhouse of the world. The Trail reveals the magnificent civic buildings built from the proceeds of its success and also the industrial landscape that made it possible. The Trail starts outside the gothic splendour of the Town Hall and passes other iconic buildings such as the Central Library, Midland Hotel, Manchester Central and the Beetham Tower, the tallest building in the UK outside London. In Castlefield it passes the Museum of Science and Industry which tells the story of the world’s first industrial city - admission is free. It also passes key locations in Manchester's musical past and present, including the Bridgewater Hall, Hacienda and Free Trade Hall. On the way you will pass many places to stop for food and drink, so why not make a full day of your visit to Manchester and combine the Trail with a visit to some of the city’s many other attractions?
This is a walking trail of 2 miles. It is largely on the city's pavements but there are also stretches on canal towpaths and the cobbled streets around Castlefield. It is suitable for pushchairs and energetic wheelchair users.
