The Isle of Wight is an amazing diamond shaped island, just a short ferry ride from the mainland over the Solent, one of the busiest sailing areas in the world.
It is an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' with many unspoilt areas to explore on the extensive network of bridleways and footpaths.
The backbone of the island is a ridge of chalk downland that runs from west to east with its highest point at St Boniface Down near Ventnor.
Newport is its administrative centre situated near the geographical centre of the island. Ryde is the largest town whilst Cowes is probably the best known with its many saiing connections.
Queen Victoria came to Osborne House in 1845, establishing the island as a fashionable resort, along with many famous people include Alfred Lord Tennyson who settled at Farringford near Freshwater whilst Keats, Charles Darwin and Longfellow holidayed at Shanklin.
