  • YOUR CASE

Captain Kidd, imprisoned in Winchester debtors' prison wrote a letter to the Lord of the Admiralty, containing a treasure map showing the location of the proceeds of his life's work. He offered this in return for his freedom. Unfortunately he was ignored and duly hanged! The map was lost but resurfaced recently within the archives of ancestors to Admiral Cochlane.

    Winchester Treasure Trail

Winchester, once the capital of England in Saxon times is steeped in History. Over the centuries, Kings have been born, lived, married and buried here (including King Canute and Alfred the Great).

It was where the Domesday Book was compiled and even where Sir Walter Raliegh was tried for treason!

With so much history, it's no surprise that Winchester is a fantastic place to visit today.

This Trail has been renamed and was originally called the Winchester Cathedral Trail.

The route takes you around the Cathedral grounds and the adjoining Wolvesey Castle that was the home to many Bishops of Winchester over the centuries. It doesn't require you to enter either the Cathedral or Castle to complete the Trail, but they are great places to visit en-route if you have the time.

It is a lovely walk that mixes historic sights with a delightful stroll along the riverbank.
There's also plenty of opportunity to take a break on the Trail and visit somewhere interesting!

The trail can be purchased a the Tourist Information Centre in the Guildhall,

This trail is just over one and a half miles long and is very flat and easy to walk. Much of the walk is shared with a Mobility Trail and so is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
