  • YOUR CASE

Infamous Spanish pirate 'El Loco' has lived up to his name by turning right instead of left on his way to the West Indies - and ending up at West India Quay! In his panic to escape from the British Navy, the crazy pirate has left clues to the whereabouts of his Caribbean stash of ill-gotten riches at points around the Quays. Can you follow the Trail and find out where the treasure is located?

    West India Quay

El Loco's Treasure - Part I of the Wharf Trilogy

This is one of three* Trails in and around Canary Wharf, a brilliant mix of skyscrapers, art and culture, London's dockland heritage and modern-day big finance. The Treasure Hunt Trail begins and ends close to the Museum of London Docklands which offers free admission - so makes a great extended day out to really immerse yourself, friends or family in the treasures of the area.

It is highly recommended but by no means essential to experience this Trail at a weekend, when the business district is quiet and you can really enjoy exploring at leisure.

The West India Quay Treasure Trail is particularly suited to families as it is easy walking, pushchair-friendly, and contains easy-going clues (with a few slightly more challenging ones thrown in). You are guaranteed to enjoy some real surprises on this Trail and to learn some amazing new things about London.

The Trail starts and ends close to West India Quay DLR Station, and a short walk from Canary Wharf underground (Jubilee Line).

PLEASE NOTE the DLR only stops at West India Quay northbound. After 7pm on weekdays it also stops on the southbound platform. If travelling southbound before this time you can disembark at Canary Wharf DLR and follow signs to the Museum of London and West India Quay DLR to start.

There are plenty of bars, cafes, shops, restaurants and public toilets on the route. There are some steps between street levels, but lifts or ramps are also available in each case.

    Approximate distance 2 miles.
    Estimated completion time 2 hours.

    * Part II of the Trilogy - Canary Wharf and South Quay Murder Mystery - is now also available and planning is under way for Part III - a Wharf Spy Mission.
