  • YOUR CASE

The portly corpse of 'Cheerful' Chuck Doughball has been found in a refuse bin near to Pudding Lane. The laugh-a-minute guy, on vacation with a party of fellow Americans, had touched a few nerves with his loud jokes made in rather poor taste. But who amongst them had grown criminally sick of his corny gags? And just how did they despatch him?

City of London - Pudding Lane

Welcome to the Square Mile of the City of London. This walking Trail is one you are sure to remember, with surprises and delights around every corner. It begins and ends near to Sir Christopher Wren's Monument to the Great Fire of London, and takes in a wonderful selection of sights whose names you will recognise, but may never have seen. The route includes St Clement's Church, Leadenhall Market, Lloyds of London and Fenchurch Street Station, with many inspirational monuments and buildings along the way, before arriving back at Pudding Lane, the epicentre of the 1666 fire which consumed much of the City to the west of here.

The Trail passes right by the quiet City garden of St Dunstan in the East, and although the Trail doesn't pass through it (it has limited opening hours), you are strongly recommended to enter and explore the quiet, pleasant oasis there. Similarly, you will encounter the City of London's oldest church, All Hallows by the Tower, which is well worth a short diversion to experience its rich history.

    Approximate distance 1.5 miles.
    Estimated completion time 2 hours.
Nearest Tube Station: Monument (District and Circle Lines)
The Trail starts and ends close to Monument Tube Station.
The Trail is suitable for pushchairs, although there are some cobbled areas and kerbs which may need some assistance or negotiation. Wheelchair users may struggle with this Trail which includes some narrow, cobbled streets and some clues in hard-to-access places.

Enthusiasts may like to double this Trail up with the St Katharine Docks and Tower of London Trail which adjoins it (starts at Tower Hill tube).
