  • YOUR CASE

According to legend, Comte de l’Argent fled Normandy in the 12th Century to avoid paying taxes but not before burying a hoard of valuables for safekeeping. He settled in Lechlade intent on recovering the stash later, but the plague took him unexpectedly and the location of the treasure was lost until a map was discovered during building work in the town. Solve the clues to find the treasure and you might win a prize.

    Lechlade on Thames

Lechlade on Thames lies at the southern end of the Cotswolds, and is the highest point at which the River Thames is navigable. This makes it very popular for boating and river-based activities. It is also a lovely spot for a pub lunch, a picnic and a walk.
With a skyline dominated by the beautiful 15th Century St Lawrence's Parish Church, its quaint market place, antique shops, parks and pubs, Lechlade on Thames offers something for everyone.

The Trail route explores both the town and the riverside beginning close to the market square and remaining on paved roads for the first two-thirds of the walk. It then takes you off cross country (albeit on a well-marked pathway) before returning via St John's Lock across open fields to town. There is consequently the risk that after poor weather the fields may be waterlogged and this, combined with the steps and kissing gates make this Trail sadly not suitable for either pushchairs or wheelchairs. Be sure to allow time for a drink or lunch by the river, whether in one of the excellent pubs or with a picnic. Parking is free in the town carpark behind the New Memorial Hall in Oak Street, GL7 3AY.
