Fletcher Bond’s brickworks made him wealthy enough to travel the world. On the journey home in 1856 he buried his fortune on a remote island to save it from pirates pursuing his ship. Never to return, he literally took its location to his grave. Subsidence, discovered by parishioner Uma Neesahurtin, in St Mary's graveyard has disturbed Bond’s final resting place to reveal a map. Frampton on Severn
Frampton on Severn is a charming village which lies 10 miles south of Gloucester, east of the river Severn and connected to the Gloucestershire & Sharpness Canal by footpath. A large percentage of the village has been designated an area of Special Scientific Interest, such is the value and attraction of its myriad wildlife, flora and fauna. The Trail follows the length of The Green, believed to be the largest in the country, explores the area around St Mary the Virgin and includes an option to extend your walk to take in the best view of Frampton Court and the birdwatchers paradise that are The Pools.
At 2 miles long, the core Trail is on flat ground which is mostly paved. Take along a camera if you plan to record the flowers, waterbirds and insects which surround the ponds, and perhaps a picnic to enjoy whilst watching the local cricket club play on the green in summer. Delightful!
