  • YOUR MISSION

The ecosystem of the River Browney is under threat! Environmental terrorist, Dr DeKay, has made a bio-bomb which when activated will contaminate the river and poison the fish. Local fish-fan, Brooke Trout, has uncovered the plot but needs your help to decipher the code and deactivate the bomb. Can you help?

    Lanchester Valley Path 1

This is a Spy Trail along the Lanchester Valley Railway Path. It is designed for cycling, but can also be enjoyed by walkers. The route follows a car-free path which is well-maintained and level, making an easy and pleasant ride for families and leisure cyclists.

The Trail begins at Broompark Picnic Area on the outskirts of Durham City, and ends in the village of Langley Park. It is 3.5 miles one way, and will take you around two hours of leisurely cycling. It may take you another hour’s cycling to return to Broompark.

You will ride through fields and woods alongside the River Browney. There’s lots of wildlife to look out for. When writing this Trail we spotted a red kite, pheasants, a whitethroat, swallows, rabbits and wildflowers including cowslips and red campion.

The Trail ends in Langley Park at Diggerland, a family adventure park. Diggerland is open every weekend and bank holidays, and weekdays during the school holidays.

Another place you might like to visit on the route is Aldin Grange Fishery. It's halfway along the route and has toilets and a cafe which opens at lunchtime. It also has a farm shop which is open on Fridays and Saturdays.

As the route is level, it is also suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

This Trail is also very dog-friendly.
